Social Learning Theory – The last theory we will examine is the social theory of psychologist Albert Bandura. Social learning is defined as the process of behavior formation through the interaction of the person, behavior, and environment (Bandura, 1977). This is done through a process that Bandura calls associative interaction. This theory suggests that people control their environment (eg, quit a job) just as the environment controls people (eg example, dismissal). Therefore, learning is seen as a very active, interactive activity over which the learner has control.

Social learning shares many of the same roots as operant conditioning. Like Skinner, Bandura argues that behavior is at least partially governed by environmental information and consequences, and Bandura uses observable behavior (as opposed to attitudes, emotions, etc.) to be the first unit of study. However, unlike operant conditioning, social learning assumes that thinking or thinking affects our response to environmental information.

Social learning has four main elements: attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Before a person learns something, they must hear or listen to what is being learned. For example, you probably won’t learn much as a student in any class unless you pay attention to the text or the information the teacher is explaining. Retention is the process by which what you have seen becomes imprinted in your memory. Reproduction involves translating what is recorded in your mind into visible actions or behaviors. Obviously, the higher the level of attention and the higher the retention rate, the better the reproduction of what has been learned. Finally, motivation can affect all three systems. For example, if you are rewarded for listening (say, thank you), you will pay more attention. If you are rewarded for remembering what you learned (say, a good grade), you will retain it more. If you are rewarded for repeating what you have learned (say, a promotion for effectively motivating your subordinates), you will be more likely to repeat that behavior.
