My Social Security Account – We’ve posted a video on how to set up my social security account, but we want to encourage viewers who don’t follow this guide, especially if you’re approaching your 65th birthday. Someone needs a username and password to access my Social Security account to use the online tool to sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B during initial enrollment. And of course, if you decide you’re over 65, enrolling in Medicare Part A requires a username and password, which you’ll need to do to get your Medicare number so you can enroll in Medicare B later during the special enrollment process. . . To create an account, go to ssa.gov, scroll down to the hand icon on the left, and continue.
Social Security continues to make changes to the registration process for added security. You’ll notice that when you want to create an account, you’ll need to enter a username and password if you created your account before September 18, 2021, or log in using login.gov if you created your account after that, see on the next screen. However, a customer recently shared with us that he created an account before September 2021 but was unable to access his account. He concluded that his difficulties were due to his email address being his username. We recommend that you use an e-mail address as a username and test the system by logging in.

Sometimes unusual things happen. Another client who recently switched to Medicare around her 65th birthday was unable to set up an account and eventually discovered that Social Security had the wrong date of birth on file. Many years ago, we temporarily suspended a client’s Medicare program because his birth place was listed on the wrong marriage certificate. Again, errors do happen, so make sure you access your account and check the accuracy of the information the government holds.

Please also note that if you are setting up an account near age 65 and want to enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B during your first enrollment, do not request an additional layer of security now. According to customer feedback, this slows down the process. We recommend that you complete your Medicare enrollment in categories A and B and then add an extra layer of security.
On the right side of the new page labeled “Register”, enter your email address and create a username and password. Passwords are case sensitive and must be eight characters long.

Set Up Social Security Online Account Before Applying For Medicare
Save your password and username so that you can log in again at the selected date and time. We recommend that you enter five to ten minutes before the scheduled start time.

You cannot use your username or SSN when creating a username. Although it may not be as important as your password, you should choose a username that is unique and unpredictable.
