A major new dining, drinking and gaming concept is on its way to a rapidly changing part of Wicker Park. Robert Thompson, founder of Denver-based hospitality company Seasoned Development, closed a deal yesterday to take over the four-story building at 1348 Milwaukee Avenue. Thompson will transform the 27,000-square-foot space into its own grown-up playground, Punch Bowl Social, a 24-hour “gastro-diner,” two cocktail bars, bowling, table tennis, private karaoke rooms and many more for a planned opening in late 2015. .
Thompson, who owns Punch Bowl Socials in Denver, Portland, Austin and plans to open in Detroit, calls it a “dream come true” concept he’s been working on since 2007. “It’s really an honor to join the restaurant scene.” , he says, “(Wicker Park) is a great neighborhood.”
The Punch Bowl Social concept aims to bring out the inner child. In addition to games, the revamped menu offers modern comfort food (burgers, chicken and waffles, bar snacks, breakfast and lunch). Drink options include punch bowls, classic cocktails, beer, milkshakes, fernet and coffee, fresh juices and juices.
Four floors of the Milwaukee Avenue location will be the ground floor restaurant, while the second and third floors will house bars, bowling, table tennis, lounges, karaoke, lounges and private party rooms. Thompson doesn’t know what the basement will be used for. “I never thought I’d be able to put together 27,000 square feet (at Wicker Park),” he says.
Thompson’s team was drawn to Wicker Park, not River North, for its vibrant, “not too commercialized” urban vibe. The building, a former furniture store, is currently being demolished, and Thompson hopes to begin construction in May. His team will begin design work next week.
