The Battery, the mixed-use development that will surround the Cobb County Braves’ new stadium, is another big name on board. Denver-based Punch Bowl Social will open in the development this fall, and Hugh Acheson is the restaurant’s “culinary partner.”
Acheson joined the Punch Bowl Social team in August, taking responsibility for menu design. The chain’s locations are in Denver, Austin, Detroit, Portland, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and the Chicago suburb of Schaumburg, Illinois. The concept brings together Southern-inspired food and various games – think of a childhood version of Dave & Buster’s.
According to an announcement Tuesday, the outpost will span two floors and include eight bowling lanes, three private karaoke rooms and a bocce court. There will be a 360-degree bar and several indoor lounge areas, and on the rooftop, check out a 2,200-square-foot patio with panoramic views.
The Punch Bowl Social Restaurant is open serving breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner. Acheson’s menu is distinctly modern-Southern, and includes burgers and sandwiches, salads and “gastro-diner dishes”. Dishes at the Austin location include trout with black bean succotash, pea shoots and grilled lemon salsa verde; fried hominy; and the “Knockoff Burger” with two patties, comeback sauce, pickled onions, shredded lettuce, American cheese and a sesame seed bun.
Battery plans were first announced in October 2015 with names such as Ford Fry, Linton Hopkins and Fox Brothers. Since then, the development has included culinary headliners such as a burger chain from actor Mark Wahlberg, a fried chicken restaurant from chef Mark Taft and a taproom from Terrapin Beer Company. The Athens-based Punch Bowl Social is currently on track for a September debut.
In addition to his work with Punch Bowl Social, Acheson operates Empire State South in Midtown, Five & Ten and The National in Athens, and The Florence in Savannah. When not booked for a corporate event, this two-level eating and playing space in Atlanta’s Battery is a great place to bring family and friends for a more interesting pub-quality meal. In between bites of loaded fries, you can tackle everything from Nippy’s “One Moment in Time” to Nippy’s “Dedication” in one of the private karaoke rooms. Or, if you prefer hitting pegs with high scores, there is bowling, but also ping pong, darts and other table games. With large central bars and gaming areas on both levels serving people, a stiff drink is never out of reach. And you can opt for massive four- and eight-bowl punch cocktails to keep your party going (plus, who would dare sing Whitney with a dry throat?).
The carnival games at the O4W rooftop at Ponce City Market may seem a little suspicious, but the real attraction on the rooftop is Nine Mile Station.

It’s been a month since Punch Bowl Social opened at The Battery in the shadow of Braves SunTrust Park. The 25,000-square-foot, two-story “eEntertainment” center features everything from shuffleboard to bowling, foosball to karaoke, plus a stellar array of food and drinks—eight menus’ worth.
Under the culinary direction of Top Chef judge Hugh Acheson (Empire State South), food ranges from lunch to midnight and weekend brunch, gluten-free and kids-friendly. Think lobster rolls, grain bowls, burgers, tacos, poutine and snacks like Acheson’s beloved pimento cheese. Beer, wine, cocktails, smoothies, shakes and non-alcoholic cocktails complete the drinks.
Public reviews are coming in on Yelp, Facebook, and OpenTable, and it’s a mixed bag of yes, no, and meh. Here are some of the public’s most interesting opinions on Punch Bowl Social so far.

Yelper Alessandra N. Said, “The food was really good. Get the lobster fries.” Fellow Yelper Karen N. thought Acheson’s chili cheese was a winner and thought “Joe’s heart is in heaven, bless him!” But Yelper Zach H. was impressed with his Alabama chicken sandwich. It wasn’t until he added more white sauce that it was “pretty good”, however, the wings remained merely “spicy”.
On OpenTable, LarynM complained about the “lack of shine” of the fried chicken (which was very dry). The tomato salad was also “blue”. Ultimately, this user said that regardless of the food, Punch Bowl Social was worth it — maybe they wished they’d ordered the nachos or French toast they saw at a nearby table.
Yelp’s Kelsea O. Called Punch Bowl Social “a mess” after waiting 25 minutes to be recognized in bowling lines to order food, with “too many options to fully cover.” However, he appreciated the use of recycled materials and paper straws.
Scott B. called his experience “the worst service ever” (on game day) after ordering food and waiting an hour for “soft nachos.” Chris F. at OpenTable speculated that perhaps the Punch Bowl Social is no longer geared for the Braves game day crowd. TripAdvisor user dolphinheadq said the service was “slow”, but he decided to take some cuts at Punch Bowl Social because they were new and “still working out the kinks”.
However, Cheri C. thought her overall experience at lunch with the family was worth five stars and praised the “smiling hostess” and knowledgeable servers, as well as the variety of games and food options available. Suzette M gave the manager and staff at Dio’s an “amazing” Yelp.
Yelper Bradley J wanted the music to be turned down, which he claimed was “extremely loud” and “very bad”. But he thought the food and drink were good. TripAdvisor user RJSwartz agreed with the noise complaint, saying it was “too loud as everyone walks out” while calling the staff “nice but overwhelmed”.
Laura Ann said on Yelp that she found Punch Bowl Social to be “a more sophisticated Dave & Buster’s” and that the atmosphere was unusual “in a good way.” While at OpenTable, Deneuve like

The Battery Atlanta, SunTrust Park’s new mixed-use development, manages to continue to find exciting new tenants that will surely bring in customers even when the Braves aren’t playing. The latest announcement was that Denver-based Punch Bowl Social will open under the guidance of Atlanta chef Hugh Acheson.
Punch Bowl Social Atlanta will open in the space originally occupied by Kings Bowl, which has since left the project. The facility will be two-story, and will feature eight bowling alleys, 3 private karaoke rooms, bocce courts, ping-pong, vintage arcades and table games, a 360-degree bar, and a 2,200-square-foot rooftop patio.
We asked our friends in Cleveland, Detroit, and Minneapolis for feedback and reviews, which were all positive – “a great place for the office or a holiday party” was commented on more than once. The drink options were popular, and the chicken and waffles received high praise.
Craft cocktails and a menu dubbed “Manna from Foodie Heaven” make Punch Bowl Social sound like Dave & Buster’s on steroids, without the hassle of trading in all those tickets at the end of the night. Plus, Acheson’s involvement on the culinary side makes the whole package even more appealing.
