COVID-19 has forced much of the world to change the way they do business, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) is no different. For most people already receiving benefits, there will be no change to business as usual. For those applying for SSA benefits, there are significant changes to the process.
Note: Please check with your attorney/agent when you receive the documents in the mail to make sure they are correct. Even if there are no reports of fraud, it is important to make sure that what you sign and send is genuine and goes to the right recipient.
GEES: The SSA has a policy of not subpoenaing people without notice. Please note, if you have a recent or pending disability claim, it is not uncommon to hear from them. This does not mean that you should avoid it. The SSA has security protocols in place to ensure that when you call, or they call you, they can verify your identity.
Therefore, you should know that you will be asked at least two or more questions (such as your mother’s name or your place of birth). Consider asking these questions because of their politics. For your safety, the SSA has published a fact sheet on how they conduct their conference calls.

A 5.9 percent cost of living adjustment (COLA) increase will begin in January 2022 for more than 64 million Social Security beneficiaries. The payments will increase to 8 million SSI from December 30, 2021. The

Other changes that begin in January each year are based on the increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of income subject to Social Security tax (the maximum taxable amount) will increase from $142,800 to $147,000.
Notification of the new benefit amount is usually sent to Social Security and SSI recipients in early December. Most Social Security recipients can check their COLA notice online in their Social Security account. Individuals can create or access my Social Security account online at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount (available in English only).
Once announced, information about the 2022 Medicare changes will be available at www.medicare.gov.
